Description
Lighthouse Sucurac - Svjetionik - Faro - Leuchtturm - Lastovo
The island of Sušac, outside of waterway corridors, is located 23 nautical miles south of the island of Hvar and 13 nautical miles to the west of the island of Lastovo. The island is surrounded by the vast open sea, creating a unique atmosphere of seclusion from the outer world. This sense is even more intense than on the island of Palagruža from which sometimes the Italian coastline can be seen. Viewed from far away, the island creates an optical illusion and seems as if it consists of two separate islands.
The lighthouse Sušac was built in 1878 on the highest southern part of the island, which is extremely steep, with the cliffs hurling into the deep and clear sea, which after storms has a visibility of up to 30 metres deep. The southeastern part of the island descends mildly into the sea and is rich in beautiful coves and walking paths. The lighthouse is located 100 metres above sea-level, providing a view of the endless open sea. The building itself is a stone one storey house with two four-bed suites.
