16. Motovun Film Festival – Croatia

Typically for Motovun, this year’s main program remained as it has been since its beginnings in 1999: intentionally chaotic, deliberately undefined, a salad bowl filled with all the ingredients that we like regardless of the region, genre, length, tone or political agenda. Yet, every year when we take a step back to look at the finished program, we inevitably find that it is somehow connected. This year is no exception. We have reacted to a very good year in the American independent film, so we have included three off-Hollywood films from Sundance festival, two of which (interestingly enough) are black-and-white comedies. Each year we have more and more documentaries, and the one we’re screening this year (I believe) are particularly vivid and politically provocative. We have also sought to respond to the social crisis in the Mediterranean by including two films – Catalan The Plague and Greek The Daughter – who depict the crisis through docudrama or thriller genre. There are more and more new and interesting Indian titles, and this year we are presenting two films. Finally, there is Ulrich Seidl, film director whose work has been followed by this festival since his first feature film Dog Days, and who has premiered two new films in the last 12 months. Therefore, we will enable our audience to see his trilogy Love-Faith-Hope, as it was originally created as a whole, in three consecutive screenings. At the end, as icing on the cake we have A Stranger by Bobo Jelčić, one of several key Croatian films in the past five years, the film which has undoubtedly marked this year in our cinema.
